Cheshire woodland Wellbeing
The NHS is moving towards social prescribing, prescribing activities to benefit both mental and physical health. A recent project on the Shetland Isles saw the prescribing of bird watching for mental health issues. The benefits of engaging with nature and watching the local flora and fauna now has an evidence base with numerous research projects providing a plethora of supporting data. Academics are stating that human origins within nature rich environments mean that we need to interact with nature to stay physically and mentally well “humans evolved with nature and it’s completely unnatural for us to be separated from it”.
Research from a US university compared walking in nature to walking in an urban environment. Brain scans of participants who took a 90-minute walk in woodlands amongst trees, birds and mammals showed reduced activity in an area of the brain where high levels of activity are linked to risk of mental illness. The UK Government has recently promised that we will all be a maximum of 15 minutes of from green spaces within the next few years and developers are being encouraged to include horticulture at the design planning stage of new developments.
Forest bathing has become a recent trend, but this “new fad” has both a long history and an evidence base. In Japan and South Korea it is known as Shinrin-yoku, a term that means “taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing”. Studies have found that walking among trees lowers blood pressure, the pulse rate, and levels of cortisol, a hormone which is released in response to stress.
At Cheshire Outdoors and Cheshire Woodland Wellbeing our wellbeing team headed, up by psychologist Anita Morris, has a proven track record in working with organisation and teams, and with people with all ages with a wide range of conditions impacting on mental health and wellbeing. We deliver both group and individual sessions as a one-off event or a developmental project lasting days, weeks or months. We tailor everything we do to the needs of those we are working with and we work to agreed outcomes.
Whether we are delivering a woodland walk in the company of owls, a mindfulness session with birds of prey or a team building exercise we guarantee that participants will have fun as well as impacting on mental health, wellbeing and performance. Clients report reduced anxiety and depression, improved problem solving, increased confidence and improved communication skills amongst others.
